The Make-A-Wish Foundation is Chi Omega Fraternity's National Philanthropy. Since the start of our alliance, Chi Omegas have made a difference in many children's lives through volunteering time, talents, and dollars. The Make-A-Wish Foundation has honored Chi Omega for the incredible volunteer efforts of our members.
The Chi Omega Fraternity at Sacred Heart University has planned several fundraisers over the past year since we first colonized in the fall of 2011. During our first year we have made impressive strides towards raising money and supporting the Make-A-Wish foundation. We have also done a good job of advertising what the Foundation does for children on campus through word of mouth from our informed sisters and our explanations at events!
On 11-11-11, students donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation by buying Make-A-Wish bracelets that our sisters handcrafted. In December of 2011 and 2012, we set up tables outside of the dining halls and asked students to write letters to Santa. For each letter to Santa written, Macy's would donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish foundation. We collected roughly 500 letters each time! In the spring of 2011, we held another fundraiser with an "Easter Egg" theme. For a small donation, a student could receive an egg that could contain a raffle prize, candy, or a gift card. This past winter of 2012, we held our first Holiday Boutique Bazar where local businesses came to sell products in the UC auditorium. Large percentages of the profit from each company went to the Make-A-Wish foundation. We even had and Alex and Ani bracelet table!
This spring 2013, we hosted our first philanthropy week, Wish Week! We fundraised throughout the week, and sold leis and hibiscus hair clips to go along with our Hawaiian themed week. Also, there were cutout flowers and coconuts that students wrote their name on and placed them on the LuOwl poster outside of Student Union. We held a Surfboard Decorating Contest for all Greek Organizations and other clubs on campus to attend and enjoy competing for having the best-decorated surfboard. To end off our first Wish Week, we held a fundraiser named the Chi O LuOwl (Luau theme). Those who came enjoyed Seashell decorating, hula hoop and limbo contests, picture taking behind a life-size wooden cutout of a hula dancer and surfer, raffle prizes, Make-A-Wish sunglasses for sale, Walnut Beach Creamery ice cream, and a volleyball tournament! It was a fun filled week that ended up allowing us to fundraise $1,087.83 for Make A Wish!
