It all began on April 5, 1895, at the University of Arkansas when four young women, with the help of a local dentist, established the secrets and symbolism that today bind over 260,000 women. This small band of women founded Chi Omega after realizing a need for an organization that would foster both friendship and respect for the potential and inherent value of women. Over the years, Chi Omega has provided its members with unique opportunities in leadership, scholarship, and lifelong friendship - striving to provide each Sister with a commitment to personal integrity, excellence in academic and intellectual pursuits, intergenerational participation, community service, leadership opportunities and social enrichment.
CLEVELAND EAST CHI OMEGA ALUMNAE
Sometime between 1920 and 1928 four Chi O alums started our Cleveland chapter. For more than 30 years they alternated their monthly meetings between the east and west sides. But in 1953 the group was split into two distinct chapters, who join together for an annual founders day celebration in April. We continue to have a close relationship with our west side sisters and work together on special projects like Make a Wish and Chi-O-Hio Day.
Our chapter has been active for over 60 years, has a scholarship fund for local collegiates, participates in Panhellenic events, contributes to Make-a-Wish. We enjoy continuing sisterhood thru monthly meetings, often at sisters' homes. Many local philanthropies have benefited from our efforts. We also have members who have acted as advisors for Kent State U. and John Carroll U. Each April we share an Eleusinian celebration with the Cleveland West Side Alumnae.
We are active members of Cleveland Alumnae Panhellenic Association and participate in their events. This year Nancy Toth is the president of CAPA as well as our chapter president. Plan to support Chi Omega by attending the CAPA luncheon on May 17, 2014 at the Silver Grille in Cleveland.
Many of our members are actively involved in their community, serving on boards of arts, education, garden, and medical organizations. WHO ARE WE?
Chi Omegas from 28 different chapters, ages 24 to 90+, living on the east side of Cleveland.WHAT DO WE DO
Enjoy continuing sisterhood, meeting monthly between September and June.
Have speakers, programs, and go to events. For many years we met on the first Tuesday of the month, often at members homes. In 2008 we used a new format. All meetings were on the 5th day of the month. In 2009 we met on the 6th. This year we are adding Happy Hours and setting meetings for varied days in the first week of the month. April is a shared Eleusina with the west side Chi Os and May recognizes 50 yr + members.
