Our Story
It all began on April 5, 1895, at the University of Arkansas when four young women, with the help of a local dentist, established the secrets and symbolism that today bind over 260,000 women. This small band of women founded Chi Omega after realizing a need for an organization that would foster both friendship and respect for the potential and inherent value of women. Over the years, Chi Omega has provided its members with unique opportunities in leadership, scholarship, and lifelong friendship - striving to provide each Sister with a commitment to personal integrity, excellence in academic and intellectual pursuits, intergenerational participation, community service, leadership opportunities and social enrichment.

Shirley Wilcox Hennessey
Kappa Gamma, Ohio Wesleyan
jwhennessy@aol.com

Shirley, married to her husband Joe for 53 years, is a mother of five boys and grandmother of 14.  A Kappa Gamma at Ohio Wesleyan, Shirley met her husband and followed him around the country while  he fulfilled his military obligations.  As a result, she didn't complete her degree, but 27 years later she returned to school, graduated and ran her own financial business for 10 years.  Yep, she's a Chi O!

As a winter visitor, Shirley and Joe bought a condominium in Paradise Valley 25 years ago.  In 2006 they made the decision to retire and sell their home in South Bend, Indiana and move permanently to Arizona where she stays very active.  Once a week they volunteer at the Andre House making and serving food for over 600 people.  She also volunteers with the National Christ Child Society making teddy bears for children admitted into Foster Care.  The teddy bears give them something to play with, comfort and keep.  To nourish their love of the arts, they volunteer as ushers for the Phoenix Symphony.  As former Chicago Symphony season ticket holders, it's been a great way for them to still experience the music they enjoy.

Quick Facts About Shirley:

  • Shirley was very active in her alumnae group in South Bend.  She participated in Panhellenic events, fashion shows and other fundraisers.
  • Shirley has traditionally made her delicious cheesecake for each child in college during finals.  With seven grandchildren in college, she does her best to keep up the tradition.
  • Her granddaughter currently attends the University of Arizona.  Shirley is encouraging her to experience recruitment next fall.  Stay tuned!!
  • Her grandson is a high school junior running for State Student Government of Arizona.  Elections were held in January of 2008.
  • She is an avid bridge player and looking for other bridge players in Phoenix.  Please contact her at jwhennessy@aol.com to set up a game!

Welcome to the Valley of the Sun!

The Phoenix Chi Omega Alumnae group is a strong alumnae chapter with activities for all sisters, from recent graduates, to new mommies, to wise sister owls.  The alumnae board, including sisters leading our many activity groups (see our calendar of events, right), meets quarterly to plan upcoming events and accomplish other official administration duties.
