Our Story
It all began on April 5, 1895, at the University of Arkansas when four young women, with the help of a local dentist, established the secrets and symbolism that today bind over 260,000 women. This small band of women founded Chi Omega after realizing a need for an organization that would foster both friendship and respect for the potential and inherent value of women. Over the years, Chi Omega has provided its members with unique opportunities in leadership, scholarship, and lifelong friendship - striving to provide each Sister with a commitment to personal integrity, excellence in academic and intellectual pursuits, intergenerational participation, community service, leadership opportunities and social enrichment.

Our Local Story:
Psi Gamma has a long and proud history on Mercer's campus. Our chapter received its charter from Chi Omega headquarters on December 18, 1943 and was installed by Helen Gordon. With just 25 Charter Members, Psi Gamma was off the ground and ready to do great things. Always a campus leader, Psi Gamma has provided Mercer University with so many gifts, including an engraved silver punch bowl in 1968 and engraved stone commemorating 50 great years on campus in 1993. Like other chapters, we produce a biannual newsletter, giving sisters an opportunity to highlight one another's strengths in Psi Gamma Sounds. We have several local traditions that sisters have created and maintain including pledge class "words", Chi Omega Week (which benefits our philanthropy, the Make-A-Wish Foundation) and our local symbol, the Chili Pepper. Psi Gamma sisters are red hot!

Recruitment
Chi Omega is FUN! Every year, over 5,000 young women across America join the largest women’s fraternity in the world for sisterhood and lifelong friendships. We encourage you to participate in Mercer's formal sorority recruitment process, which will be held from August 26th through August 29th, 2009.  During recruitment, you will have the opportunity to meet our sisters and learn more about our purposes, activities, and the opportunities you will have as a Chi Omega sister. To sign up for recruitment click here.  To view pictures of our activities through the year, click here. We can't wait to meet you!
Service
Community Service means that we want to make a difference on our campuses and in our communities.  We know that giving back to others unselfishly makes the world a better place and makes us better people.   Serving and giving helps to connect us.

Psi Gamma supports Chi Omega's national philanthropy, the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  We enable sisters to attend wish-grant training and host service events throughout the year to fundraise for this very worthwhile cause.  Join us for Chi Omega Week, a time we spend hosting events such as a Chili Cook-Off, holiday decorations contest, and Jingle Bell Run - a toy drive which benefits Toys For Tots.
Sisters Flourish
Since 1895, six purposes have guided the direction of every chapter and brought its members unequaled opportunities for personal growth and development. Today, they are still valid as these intelligently interpreted purposes help to preserve and enhance the best values of American culture.

Chi Omega's Six Purposes Are:

  • Friendship
  • High Standards of Personnel
  • Sincere Learning and Creditable Scholarship
  • Participation in Campus Activities
  • Career Development
  • Community Service

The concept of balance is what we all strive for in our daily lives. As Chi Omegas, we find that our Ritual and the Six Purposes serve as a guide in our pursuit of happiness and a balanced life.

Symbols
Chi Omega’s symbols are a visual representation of our purposes and ideals.

Our national symbols are the owl and skull and crossbones

Chi Omega's national flower is the White Carnation

Psi Gamma's local symbol is the Chili Pepper
