Our Story
It all began on April 5, 1895, at the University of Arkansas when four young women, with the help of a local dentist, established the secrets and symbolism that today bind over 260,000 women. This small band of women founded Chi Omega after realizing a need for an organization that would foster both friendship and respect for the potential and inherent value of women. Over the years, Chi Omega has provided its members with unique opportunities in leadership, scholarship, and lifelong friendship - striving to provide each Sister with a commitment to personal integrity, excellence in academic and intellectual pursuits, intergenerational participation, community service, leadership opportunities and social enrichment.

Our story at BSC began when, in the late 1980s, the staff at our school saw a need for an organization on campus with a commitment to community service, diversity among its members, and strong academics. They found those characteristics in Chi Omega. With the help of local alumnae, the Omicron Lambda chapter was born. An excellent team consisting of actives from the University of Alabama, those local alumnae, and Chi Omega's National Director of Extension conducted Recruitment for the first time in 1989. That first pledge class created a tradition of intelligence and poise that has attracted several hundred young women over the years!

Service
Community Service means that we want to make a difference on our campuses and in our communities.  We know that giving back to others unselfishly makes the world a better place and makes us better people.   Serving and giving helps to connect us.

We are proud to recognize The Make-A-Wish Foundation as our national philanthropy.  Chi O Kick-off, our main philanthropy event, is held each fall.  As a result of Chi O Kick-off this past year, the sixty-six members of our chapter completed a total of 364 hours of volunteer work for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.  By collecting donations, charging admission for our event, raffling prizes, and selling T-shirts, we successfully raised over $9000, which exceeds the average cost to grant a child's wish.

Because of our success with Chi-O Kickoff this year, members of our chapter were able to attend two wish-granting events.  We hosted a send-off party at the Chi Omega townhouse for a 12-year-old girl and her family, whose wish was granted to attend a trip to Disney World. We also attended a wish-granting session at the Riverchase Galleria for a little boy named Evan whose wish was granted to make his own TV show.  A couple of months later when he finished filming his show, we were able to attend the premiere of his show at the Rave Theater in Vestavia. The premiere was complete with his arrival in a limo, entrance on a red carpet, and us, along with others in the community, acting as Evan's biggest fans!  He even autographed photos for us!

In addition to our dedication to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, our sisters can be found all over Birmingham helping others in our community.  From raising funds for the American Cancer Society during BSC's Relay for Life to serving meals at the local First Light Women's Shelter, a Chi O can always count on one of her sisters to volunteer with her.  Our actives can also be found at every other Greek organization's philanthropy event; from KA's golf tournament to ZTA's volleyball tournament, we are willing to help out to benefit another group's cause.

Sisters Flourish

Our chapter is very proud to have had the highest overall GPA of all BSC sororities eight of the past nine semesters, including the Spring Term 2008.  Also, out of all sorority new member classes, Omicron Lambda new members had the highest GPA for the Fall 2007 term.  Omicron Lambda was recognized by receiving the College Cup for the second consecutive year at BSC Greek Week 2008. We were also the Women's Intramural Champions for the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 academic years!  Additionally, our chapter has won the Award of Excellence, the highest award given by Nationals to Chi Omega chapters, seven times!

Each unique member contributes in her own way to our well-rounded chapter. Thirty of our members made the Dean's List for the 2007-08 academic year.  Also, in 2007, Miss Birmingham-Southern College was one of our members Meredith Ervin. Another one of our members Christina McCauley has competed in the Miss Georgia Pageant for the past two summers, and has placed in the top five both years! One of BSC's fraternity sweethearts is a Chi Omega, and the 2008 Greek Woman of the Year was Omicron Lambda's 2006-2007 president Hillary Hughes. Last fall, a Chi Omega from every class represented Birmingham-Southern on the Homecoming Court.  Additionally, our members hold important leadership positions on campus, such as SGA representatives, members of the Honor Council, presidents of the Biological Honor Society Beta Beta Beta, the health pre-professional honor society Alpha Epsilon Delta, Mortar Board, the accounting organization on campus IMA, and Order of Omega.  Our actives are also members of campus organizations such as Southern Ambassadors, SOS, Peer Advisers, Resident Advisers, Honors Program, Dance Program, PSSO, Service-Learning, and Omicron Delta Kappa.
Symphony
The Chi Omega Symphony has reflected the purposes of Chi Omega members since its composition in 1904 by Ethel Switzer Howard on the eve of her initiation into the Xi Chapter of Chi Omega at Northwestern University.
