The Make-A-Wish Foundation is Chi Omega Fraternity's National Philanthropy. Since the start of our alliance, Chi Omegas have made a difference in many children's lives through volunteering time, talents, and dollars. The Make-A-Wish Foundation has honored Chi Omega for the incredible volunteer efforts of our members.
The Sigma Alpha chapter has gotten very involved with the local Make-A-Wish chapter in the near by city of Cincinnati. In the fall semester of 2011, Sigma Alpha raised enough money to send a young girl to Disney World with her family. As a chapter, we were very proud of this accomplishment and hope to grant many more wishes in the future. In order to raise money for the foundation, the Sigma Alpha chapter is involved in three main events throughout the academic year.
1.) State to State 5k Run/Walk = This is a 5k event through the city of Oxford. With every runner that signs up for the race using a registration form associated with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a certain percentage is put forth to charity.
2.) Mom's Weekend Auction = Every spring, the Sigma Alpha chapter invites all mothers of the active members to spend a weekend in Oxford. On the Sunday of the weekend there is an annual brunch in which baskets are donated to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Baskets can be anything from a cookbook collection to Chi Omega spirit wear and are created by moms and daughters as well as the philanthropy committee. All of the proceeds from this silent auction go directly to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in order to fund the next wish of a deserving child.
3.) King of the Wing Competition = This is an annual wing eating contest between the fraternities and sororities on Miami's campus. Sigma Alpha pairs with one other sorority and two fraternities in order to help raise money for our philanthropies. Buffalo Wild Wings helps to sponsor this event where teams of four participants are created and enter for a fee that helps to support our philanthropies.
Many of our sisters are also trained Wish Granters and have the opportunity to work directly with Wish families and children in granting wishes. Every year, about 20 new Sigma Alphas attend training in Cincinnati to become even more involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The experience that come from working with these amazing children and families touches all of our hearts and impacts the lives of each chapter member.
